What do Facebook and the Roman wine trade have in common? The archaeological record of shipwrecks provides evidence for seaborne communication and the links that connected producers, traders, and consumers around the ancient Mediterranean. Viewed through a lens of landscape theory and network science, Roman shipwrecks allow us not only to explain French wine in rural Cyprus, but also to define regional maritime economies, gauge integration among them, and determine how economic relationships intersected with broader political and sociocultural trends.
