Generations of scholars
have relied heavily on ancient literary accounts of the Roman sacking of the
city-state of Corinth in the mid-second century, BC, to interpret
archaeological remains in the city. Many Greek and Roman authors pain grim
pictures of utter destruction and the following abandonment while drawing
parallels to the razing of Carthage, Rome's greatest enemy. However, new
archaeological evidence offers numerous challenges to both ancient descriptions
and modern interpretations. Dr. James will detail these new developments and
show how many Corinthians dealt with the aftermath of this well-known ancient
destruction.
